Everything about China's Innovation
The China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance on August 11 released information regarding nationwide EV charging and battery swapping infrastructure. The data show that the number of public charging piles increased by 47,000 units in July compared to June, representing an increase of 65.7% year-on-year.
As of July 2022, members of the alliance, including major EV manufacturers, grid companies, communication service providers, and charging facility manufacturers in China, have reported a total of 1,575,000 public charging piles, including 684,000 DC charging piles, 890,000 AC charging piles, and 485 integrated AC and DC charging piles. From August 2021 to July 2022, an average of 52,000 public charging piles will be added monthly.
The gross amount of electricity charged nationwide in July 2022 was approximately 2.19 billion kWh, an increase of 260 million kWh from the previous month, up 125.2% year-on-year and 13.7% sequentially.
From January to July 2022, the incremental charging infrastructure totaled 1,362,000 units, of which incremental public charging piles rose 199.2% year-on-year and incremental private charging piles allocated with vehicles continued to rise, up 390.1% year-on-year. As of July 2022, the cumulative number of charging infrastructure units nationwide was 3.980 million units, an increase of 97.5% year-on-year.
From January to July 2022, 3.194 million NEVs were sold, and charging infrastructure and NEVs both saw further explosive growth. The incremental pile-to-vehicle ratio was 1 to 2.3, and the construction of charging infrastructure could basically meet the rapid development of the NEV industry.

Dongguan Securities noted that the continuous rise in the penetration rate of NEVs is propelling the development of the charging pile industry. Since the second half of 2020, a high growth rate has been observed in China’s NEV market. It is expected that the sales of NEVs in the country will exceed more than 5 million units in 2022, and approach 10 million units by 2025. Along with the rapid development of the EV market in recent years and the rapid growth of ownership, there has been an increasing demand for EV charging.
By the end of 2021, the number of NEVs in China reached 7.84 million and that of charging piles reached 2.617 million – a vehicle-pile ratio of roughly 3:1 – still a large gap. It will help to improve the construction of charging infrastructure to ease consumers’ mileage anxiety about NEVs and support the expansion of greener travel..
